Hey! I’m Rukhshan, a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Tufts University specialising in human-AI interaction.

My research seeks to understand and improve how human-AI systems shape the way people interact with each other. Specifically, my doctoral work focuses on the role of AI-mediated communication (AIMC) in mixed-neurotype contexts, spanning (1) the design and user-centered evaluation of AIMC systems for complex social interactions, and (2) the development of benchmarking frameworks to audit large language models (LLMs) for fair mediation. A core theme of my research is shared responsibility: designing communication support that distributes the effort of adaptation across all participants, rather than placing the burden on one person or group.

Previously, I worked on building a proxy system that enables low-cost and easy integration of generative AI models into custom applications. This infrastructure has powered teaching and class-discussion bots at Tufts, an agentic question-answer service deployed over WhatsApp for 12+ months, and an API used by students to build AI-powered projects across multiple Tufts courses.

I also led mixed-methods studies of socio-technical challenges, including gender disparities among frontline healthcare workers and the spread of pandemic-related misinformation.

I am advised by Fahad Dogar.

Here is my CV (contains full list of papers).

Prior to Tufts, I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan. I was advised by Zartash Uzmi and Fareed Zaffar.
